Martha Banks, Board of Finance
In November 2009, Martha Banks completed her fifth year of service on the Board of Finance. She has served as Vice Chairman of the Board since November 2008.
During her service, Martha has earned the respect of her colleagues for her thorough and accurate analysis of Town and Education budgets and as well as new initiatives and capital projects.
As a member of the Board of Finance, Martha seeks to approve budgets and projects that support and improve the quality of life in Darien but which at the same time deliver services as efficiently and economically as possible. Martha is willing to ask tough questions of the Board of Selectmen, the Board of Education and town department heads regarding proposed budgets and projects. She frequently requests additional information and data in order to develop a comprehensive understanding of proposals and to ensure that financial resources are allocated to achieve best value for the town. She has asked the town and the Board of Education to prioritize their project requests to assist the Board of Finance in its deliberations. She combines strength of conviction with flexibility and willingness to consider the ideas of others.
Before serving on the Board of Finance, Martha was an active community volunteer in Darien. She has served in various board capacities with the League of Women Voters. She was Co-chair of the Council of Darien School Parents (CDSP) and the Tokeneke PTO, and was the PTO budget rep for the various schools attended by her children. She and her family were a “host family” for a student in the Darien ABC program. Martha’s political activities have included serving as Nominating Chair of the Darien Democratic Town Committee.
Martha’s analytical skills were developed by her business experiences in chemical purchasing and project management at International Paper Company and Procter and Gamble. She received an MBA from Wharton.
